The Gilded Knot
Three guilds, one poisoned magistrate, and a city that pays well for silence.
The hook
Magistrate Corvin Hale collapsed at his own table mid-toast, and the physicians say slow venom, a week of it. He lives — barely — and hires quietly: find who paid for his death before the second dose finds him. The trouble is that Hale was about to rule on the Gilded Knot: a three-way charter dispute between the Chandlers, the Silver Ferrymen, and the Vintners’ Consortium, and every one of them is better off with him gone.
What’s really going on
None of the three guilds did it — exactly. The poisoner is Widow Essa Marchbane of the Vintners, acting alone to protect a secret older than the charter: the Consortium’s cellars stand on a forgotten crypt, and her family’s fortune came out of it a generation ago. Hale’s ruling would open the cellars to surveyors. The guild war everyone expects is a curtain; the secret is a grave.
The tangle, in three acts
Act I — A Warning on the Rooftops
Asking questions in Aldermark gets answers: first polite, then a rooftop chase after a spy who’s been shadowing the party since the docks. Their satchel holds sketches of the party and — oddly — of the Vintners’ cellar doors.
Act II — The Counting-House Cellar
Each guild opens its books to prove innocence (each hiding pettier crimes — let the party find smuggled brandy and a bribed harbormaster). The Vintners’ tour avoids one cellar. Its “locked strongbox” is a mimic, and the wall behind it is newer than the rest by a hundred years.
Act III — The Masquerade
The Consortium’s charter-gala. Essa means to finish Hale there — her hired doppelganger wears the face of Hale’s own taster. Let the party spot the tell (the taster who no longer limps), or dance with a noble who knows too much, or follow Essa to the cellar door one last time. If it goes loud, it goes very loud, in front of three hundred masked witnesses.
Key NPCs
- Magistrate Corvin Hale — dry, exact, dying slower than intended. Pays in favors, which in Aldermark are worth more than gold.
- Widow Essa Marchbane — gracious, unhurried, and genuinely sorry. She will offer the party the truth and a fortune to walk away, once.
- Fenn “Two-Cups” — the taster the doppelganger replaced, alive in a wine barrel if the party is quick and lucky.
Running it
The city soundscape is the campaign’s heartbeat — cut it for the cellar scenes and let the quiet do the work. Track the days: Hale takes the second dose at the masquerade on day five unless someone stops the cup.
